Commuters Pay 61.27% Higher For Intercity Travels In November

With the removal of fuel subsidy last June by the President Tinubu’s administration, travellers in the country have been paying higher fares for all modes of transportation, with the average intercity transport fare per drop surging by 61.27% last November for road travels.

The National Bureau of Statistics, in its ‘Transport Fare Watch (November 2023)’ published on Thursday on its website, indicated that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop on a year-on-year basis rose by 61.27% from N3,848.48 in November 2022 to N6,206.53 in November this year.

According to the report, on a month-on-month, however, the rose by 5.45% compared to N5,885.68 paid by commuters in October 2023.

The Bureau reported that in the month under review, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop declined by -6.23% from N1,117.30 in October to N1,047.63 in while on a year-on-year basis, it rose by 64.44% from N637.10 in November 2022.

It clarified that in air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N81,334.05 in November 2023, showing an increase of 3.24% while compared to the preceding month’s fare, adding that on a year-on -year basis, the fare rose by 11.01% from N73,270.27 in November 2022.

The report further reflected that the average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N473.13 in November 2023 which dropped by 6.74% when compared with the N507.30 paid in October 2023 while on a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 3.07% when compared with N459.02 paid in November last year.

The statistics agency also indicated in the report that for waterway transportation, the average fare paid by a passenger in the month under review dropped to N1,352.70 from N1,395.68 paid in October, representing a decrease of -3.08% on monthly basis.

However, the Bureau disclosed that on a year-on-year basis, it increased by 34.42% in November this year compared with N1,006.33 paid by a passenger in November 2022.
