Investment researchers Proshare Limited, a leading stockbroking and investment consulting services provider in Nigeria, have projected that given the prevailing micro and macroeconomic factors in the nation’s economy, investor appetite for profit-taking may be sustained this week in the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) as trading opens today.

In the firm’s Newsletter titled ‘Stock Recommendation for the Week of August 31, 2026’ and circulated to our correspondent early today, the experts linked their projections on the trading trend in the equities market to partly the FTSE Russel’s reclassification of Nigeria from Unclassified to Frontier Market status slated to kick on September 21 this year.

The analysts recalled that the Nigerian equities market closed August with a modest recovery after weeks of profit-taking, as renewed buying interest in selected large-cap stocks lifted the NGX All-Share Index by 0.81% WoW to 241,298.47 points during the trading on Friday, pushing its YTD return to 55.06%.

They noted that the rebound, however, remained selective, with gains concentrated in banking and oil and gas stocks rather than reflecting a broad-based return of risk appetite.

The firm’s researchers anticipate that the transition into September will bring a stronger market catalyst as FTSE Russell has confirmed that Nigeria’s reclassification from Unclassified to Frontier Market status will take effect on September 21, following its assessment of the T+1 settlement framework and confirmation that no material settlement, operational or funding issues have emerged.

They stated that September FTSE Frontier Index review files would be published on September 2, providing an immediate reference point for investors assessing potential index-linked positioning and foreign participation.

On the outlook for the equities market, the experts projected: “For investors, the key issue is whether the FTSE development can convert improved market visibility into sustained foreign participation, deeper liquidity and broader demand, rather than simply provide a short-term sentiment boost. The market enters September with substantial YTD gains, making valuation discipline and stock selection increasingly important as investors reposition in anticipation of the reclassification timeline.

“The week ahead is therefore likely to be characterised by a balance between the positive external validation from FTSE Russell and continued domestic profit-taking.

“Attention should centre on the composition of the FTSE review files, foreign investor flows, corporate earnings, and the broader market’s ability to sustain the recent recovery beyond a handful of large-cap stocks”, the experts added.
