Ondo State Government on Tuesday launched a mass metering scheme to improve access to electricity and address the lingering problem of over-billing regime on electricity consumers in the state..

The State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, unveiled the scheme tagged ‘O’Datiwa Meters’ as part of the government’s initiative to accelerate metering of electricity consumers.

According to him, the scheme is aimed at ending inflated electricity bills and ensuring transparency in the metering system.

The governor explained: “This programme marks a crucial step in our commitment to provide a reliable and equitable electricity billing system to every citizen.

“By subsidising the meters, the government aims to address energy theft and inefficient billing practices by ensuring that residents of Ondo State pay for the energy they consume only”, he added.

Aiyedatiwa, who also hinted that the state government was preparing to venture into power generation, transmission and distribution, charged the electricity generating and distribution companies to collaborate with the government in order to boost electricity in the state

According to him, the transfer of electricity oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB) is a milestone for the state’s power sector.

The governor pointed out the transfer will allow the state to manage its electricity sector more effectively, tailoring policies to the specific needs of its people.

In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Rasaq Obe, described the initiative as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving the socioeconomic well-being of the people.
