The House of Representatives has charged the Nigerian Communications (NCC) to direct internet service providers to immediately block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic contents in the country.
The directive followed a resolution on the motion moved by one of the lawmakers, Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, during the plenary on Tuesday.
The legislator, in his motion argued that cyber pornography was becoming a big challenge with damaging impact on the social fabric of the global community and lamented that Nigeria had not taken adequate steps to address it.
Taofik, who described Nigeria as a “highly religious country” where major faiths prohibit nudity and obscenity, maintained that many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East had enacted laws banning pornography.

In addition, the lawmaker hinged his concerns on warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the negative impact of pornography, including its potential to encourage adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
He said: “Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content.”
Following the motion, the Speaker of the Green Chamber, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, subjected it to a voice vote and the lawmakers voted in support of the motion.
As a result of the resolution, the whole House asked NCC to impose penalties on service providers that failed to comply with the directive on the immediate blockage of pornographic-contents featuring websites.
