Five Nigerians have been appointed to the United Nations Group on the Information Society’s Multistakeholder Consultation Group (UNGIS-MCG), a 92-member body established to strengthen stakeholder participation in global digital policy discussions.

The UNGIS-MCG serves as an advisory and consultative platform for sharing information on UNGIS priorities and gathering feedback from diverse stakeholder communities.

The appointees include a Principal Consultant at Kontemporary Konsulting and Chair of the Advisory Council of the Africa ICT Alliance (AfICTA), Dr Jimson Olufuye,  Chief Executive Officer of Hostlag Limited, Ebenezer Dare, representing Nigeria’s technology and digital services sector,  President of the National Union of Telecommunication Engineering Students of Nigeria, Atule Christian, Executive Director of Women in Technology in Nigeria, Martha Alade, and the Executive Director of the Youths Enterprise Development and Innovation Society, Rafiu Olaore, who is representing youth development and innovation interests.

The membership of the group comprised representatives of governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical community, academia and international organisations and the initiative builds on the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 Review and designed to promote inclusive dialogue on the future of the global information society.

Based on the roles of the UNGIS-MCG in the rapidly evolving global technological space and membership tenure, the newly appointed Nigerian experts are expected to serve for a minimum of two years, providing opportunities to bring perspectives from Nigeria’s technology industry and civil society into international discussions on digital development and the priorities.

The group will facilitate information sharing, gather stakeholder feedback and promote inclusive dialogue on the future of the global information society.

Industry experts believe that the appointments of the five Nigerian experts into the UNGIS-MCG will avail them the opportunity to contribute from African perspective to international discussions that are aimed at defining digital development, technology governance and the future of the global information society.
