The latest report from the US Census Bureau on crude importation to the country from Africa indicated that Nigeria shipped crude oil worth $2.57 billion between January and August 2025, making the country largest African supplier of crude to the United States’ market during the eight-month period.
Specifically, an analysis of data from the US International Trade in Goods and Services report showed that Nigeria’s oil cargoes accounted for more than half of all African crude oil exported to the US, totalling CIF value of $4.67 billion, over the period.
According to the data, the landing value of Nigeria’s crude oil, based on the Cost, Insurance and Freight metric, reflected that Nigeria was far ahead of Angola, Libya, Ghana, and other African suppliers.
An analysis of the report revealed that Nigeria’s export value of $2.57 billion represented 55 per cent of all African oil barrels arriving at American ports in the review period just as the country also supplied the largest volume of crude oil from the continent, with American refiners taking in 33.23 million barrels during the eight-month period covered by the report.

A further breakdown of the figures showed that total SSA’s shipments to the US from January to August this year stood at 60.75 million barrels, placing Nigeria’s share at 54.7 per cent of the entire regional export.
For instance, in August Nigeria delivered 4.49 million barrels of crude to the US, with the CIF value for August reaching $353.39 million slightly higher than the 4.40 million barrels it exported in July, with CIF value of $335.97 million.
By comparison, Angola supplied 6.86 million barrels year-to-date, translating to a CIF value of $534.84 million compared to Libya’s exported 11.51 million barrels with CIF value of $900.88 million, which remained far below Nigeria’s value due to different crude grades and pricing dynamics.
The report also reflected that Ghana shipped 3.69 million barrels valued at $267.47 million, while the category labelled “Other Africa” contributed 5.45 million barrels worth $403.44 million.
The combined CIF value of the crude exports to the US from the continent in August was $850.75 million, with Nigeria alone accounting for 41.5 per cent of that month’s African shipments. In July, Africa supplied $787.51 million, of which Nigeria contributed 42.6 per cent.
The Customs Value, which excludes freight and insurance but indicates pricing at the port of origin, data also reflected this trend with Nigeria’s customs-valued crude shipped to the US standing at $2.50 billion from January to August, out of Africa’s total of $4.56bn, maintaining a similar 55 per cent dominance.
