…As Vehicle Importation Surges By 67%
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reported that Nigeria’s cargo throughput increased to 32.38 million metric tons and that the vessel tonnage surged to 46.75 million Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT), representing 19.5 per cent growth in the first quarter of this year.
The latest ‘Q1 2026 Operational Performance Review’ report released by the maritime industry regulator indicated that the growth in cargo throughput and vessel tonnage reflected increasing deployment of larger-capacity vessels across the nation’s seaports, facilitated by improving port efficiency, expanding trade activities and growing demand for port services
The report’s data reflected that total cargo throughput, excluding crude oil terminals, rose by 11.6 per cent year-on-year to 32.38 million metric tons, compared to 29.02 million metric tons recorded in the corresponding quarter of last year.

In addition, the report showed that outward cargo traffic rose by 23.7 per cent to 14.13 million metric tons in the quarter under review even as outward laden container traffic surged by 67.6 per cent from 61,332 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in Q1 2025 to 102,803 TEUs in Q1 2026, reflecting enhanced export logistics and terminal efficiency.
According to the NPA, the total vehicle units handled at the ports increased by 67 per cent to 58,870 units in Q1 this year, up from 35,262 units in the corresponding quarter of last year, while transshipment container activity increased by 83.1 per cent year-on-year.
