The Save the Consumers Initiative (SCI) on Tuesday stated that continuous need for transparency in service and product in Nigeria had remained an ongoing clamour in Nigeria country as consumers continue to grapple with poor services and substandard products.
The civil society organization hinted that as part of activities to mark the World Consumer Rights Day 2025, it had concluded arrangements to organize a stakeholders’ forum to chart a way forward for transparent dealing through open terms and conditions of products and services that consumers can interpret before buying such products or subscribing to such services.
Also, the group hinted that the conference with the theme ‘Transparency, Responsible Consumption’, is organized to raise awareness on consumer rights, protection, and empowerment.
The Executive Director of the SCI, Aliyu Ilias, in a statement, confirmed that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC),Tunji Bello, was expected to feature as the keynote paper presenter, while the Director General of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, would serve as special guest along with Director-General of National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye.

Ilias stated: “The event, which is scheduled to hold this Friday in Abuja is part of Save the Consumers Initiative’s effort to expand the frontiers of the fight against fake and substandard products that is doing enormous damage to Nigerian consumers who are constantly at the receiving end of bad services and consumption of substandard products.
“The conference will present an opportunity for regulatory bodies in the country to explain their level of mediation between the users of services, product and the producer of goods and services.
“A case in hand is the fake pharmaceutical product among other substandard products Nigerians consume daily, there is the need to put a stop to it and it is a collective responsibility.
“The consumer should also endeavour to consumer responsibly by double checking the authenticity of product and services through the regulatory bodies. There must be a window of effective communication between the consumers and regulatory bodies in Nigeria. Nigeria must be informed adequately on the standards and qualities of goods and services in Nigeria”, the civil activist added.
The World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated globally on the 15th of March annually.
