The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched its Green Channel initiative in furtherance of its innovative drives targeted at enhancing port operations and reducing the time and cost of doing business in the maritime industry.
The Green Channel Initiative is a strategic, technology-driven framework designed to expedite the clearance of goods and vehicles at borders, with a strong focus on sustainability, trade facilitation, and compliance. It has two main branches, namely one focusing on trade facilitation and compliance (Green Lane) and the other on environmental sustainability (Green Border Initiative).
The tech-powered channel will allow containers to be moved directly from vessels to a dedicated examination area and by so doing eliminate delays and inefficiencies in the clearing process.
Speaking on the initiative, Comptroller-General of the NCS, Mr. Bashir Adeniyi, explained that the Green Channel was developed based on trust and confidence built with stakeholders to fast-track trade facilitation.

According to him, the initiative is expected to boost revenue for the government, reduce cost of business, and create a more competitive economy.
The Customs boss explained that the Green Channel would operate in designated areas, with containers tracked and monitored online to ensure transparency and accountability in the clearing process.
