Customs’ TinCan Command Generates N162Bn In Six Months

The Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS’) Tincan Island Command on Monday reported N162,701,701,136.83 as its generated revenue for the six month period ended June 30 this year.

The amount raked in by the command showed an increase of about N32 billion over its N130,006,136, 996.36 collections for the corresponding period of last year.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr Uche Ejesieme, who disclosed this in a statement, indicated that the Customs Area Controller Tincan Island Port, Comptroller Musa Baba Abdullahi, confirmed the figures during his meeting with some stakeholders in his office.

According to him, the Customs Area Controller explained that the Command had been repositioned for improved operational efficiency at all segments of its activities.

He stated: “We are deploying multi-layered approach in addressing the issues of compliance which is a panacea to Trade Facilitation, through reward for compliance and ensuring that compliant declarants are given expeditious attention in line with the presidential directive on Ease of Doing Business.”

Abdullahi also hinted that the Command was in the process of fully automating key seats in the Command to facilitates seamless operations and also improving the capacity of its men and officer through various initiatives, including the just concluded training of officers on E-Transire and NSA-End User Certificate Procedure.

The Customs Area Controller also disclosed that the Command effected seizure of assorted offending items including used clothing, children toys, assorted furniture, bags of rice, shoes, handbags, used vehicles with  the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N138,752,991 during the review period

He recalled that during the period under review, the Command also seized large quantity of ammunition and other military hardware, promising that the Command will not lower its guards in ensuring that such illicit consignments do not pass through to Command.

While appreciating the support of the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), and the Service’s management team for their support during the period under review, Abdullahi assured that the Command would continue to leverage on the already harnessed competences of its hard working personnel to improve its performance in the months ahead.

Commenting on the recurring issues of multiple alerts due to non compliance with the fiscal policies, the Controller, who urged importers/agents to ensure honest declarations, promised that the completion of the ongoing “One Stop Shop” area project would help in tackling the challenge.
