Nigeria’s active mobile subscriptions across the four major mobile networks rose to 225.8 million in January this year, representing a 1.7% increase when compared with the 222 million active lines recorded in December 2022.
The latest report by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that the growth in mobile subscriptions was spurred largely by MTN, which recorded an additional 2.9 million active lines in the month.
The industry regulatory commission reported that in the month under review, the four mobile network operators (MNOs), comprising MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile recorded a total of 3.8 million additional subscriptions in the month.
Based on the latest subscription level, the nation’s teledensity, which measures the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area and is currently calculated by the NCC based on 190 million population, increased to 118.5% in January 2022, from the 116.5% recorded in the preceding month.
The latest data from the NCC reflected with the MTN gaining 2.9 million active subscriptions in January this year, the telecoms operator’s total active customers rose to 91.9 million from 89 million in December 2022.
According to the data, Airtel recorded new active mobile subscriptions of 497, 863 in January to raise its active subscribers’ base to 60.5 million from 60 million in the preceding month while Glo recorded 44,522 increase, thereby raising total active customers in its network to 60.3 million from 62.9 million recorded as of the end of December 2022.
For 9mobile, the data reflected that in the month under review, the telco’s active mobile subscriptions totaled 178,878, which raised its total active mobile subscriptions to 12.8 million in January this year.
