Consumers Spend 6.71% Lower On Cooking Gas In June – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday reported that consumers paid less for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) in the month of June, despite the surging inflation rate recorded in the month.

The Bureau, in its ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (June 2023)’ reported that the cooking average retail price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) decreased by 6.71% on a month-on-month basis from N4,360.69 recorded in May 2023 to N4,068.26 in June 2023.

Similarly, the statistics agency clarified that on a year-on-year basis, the cooking gas price decreased by 3.56% from N4,218.38 it sold at in June 2022.

According to the report,  a state-by-state prices of the commodity showed that Kwara buyers recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) with N4,750.00, followed by Niger with N4,691.16, and Zamfara with N4,683.33.

On the other hand, the Bureau disclosed that Ondo recorded the lowest price with N3,287.86, followed by Ekiti and Nasarawa with N3,288.46 and N3,364.62 respectively.

The report further reflected that when analyzed on zone-by-zone basis, buyers of the commodity in  the North-Central paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) with N4,421.97, followed by the North-West with N4,260.30, while the South-West recorded the lowest with N3,709.16.

In a related report, the Bureau also reported that the average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene (HHK) paid by consumers in June 2023 increased by 2.49% to N1,236.10, up from the N1,206.05 they purchased the product in the preceding month.

According to the statistics agency’s ‘National Household Kerosene Price Watch (June 2023)’ which was also published on Wednesday, on a year-on-year basis, the average retail price per litre of the product rose by 62.28% from N761.69 in June 2022.

The NBS disclosed that on state profile analysis, the highest average price per litre in the month under review was recorded in Adamawa where consumers paid N1,691.81 per litre, followed by Abuja and Abia with N1,461.11 and N1,396.67 per litre prices respectively.

Conversely, the report indicated that the lowest price for Kerosene was recorded in Jigawa with N960.45, followed by Edo with N979.31 and Kaduna with N1,001.22.

The NBS further reported that when analyzed on zonal basis, South-East consumers bought the commodity at the highest average retail price per litre at N1,351.56, followed by the North-East with N1,341.09, while the North-West recorded the lowest price per litre at N1,056.74.

It also stated that the average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene paid by consumers in June 2023 was N4,269.13, reflecting an increase of 1.45% from N4,208.27 in May 2023 while on a year-on-year basis, the product’s price increased by 59.71% from N2,673.04 in June 2022.
