The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) reported that it handled 67 petitions lodged by depositors against banks with their claims amounting to N11.7 billion in the 2020 financial year.

The professional body, which stated this in its 2020 Annual Report sourced by our correspondent at the weekend, indicated that out of the cases, its Ethics and Professional Division resolved 53 with N1.7 billion refunded to the depositors following its investigations and findings.

Speaking during the Institute’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Saturday, the President/Chairman of Council, Dr Bayo Olugbemi, also hinted that the Council of the professional body had approved to build a well furnished, fully equipped modern multimedia communication technology and 200 seating capacity mini hall in a selected linkage institutions in the country.

According to him, the Council had approved the development of its landed property in Owerri, Imo State and Osogbo, Osun State to enable the Institute serve its members, students and other stakeholders better in the South-East and South-West zones.

On the issue of recognition of the ACIB professional certificate and banking and finance degree in public service schemes, Olugbemi said the banking and finance degree certificates had been approved and included in government schemes of service.

The CIBN President described the approval, which was announced via a memo dated April 12, 2021 with an effective date of December 4, 2020, from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, as a major milestone in the Institute’s efforts aimed at including the ACIB as in public service scheme and thereby creating opportunities for chartered bankers and degree holders to pursue their career in the civil service.

The chartered banker further pointed out that as part of the Institute’s efforts to nurture talent and sharpen the practical skills of students under the institute’s linkage programme, the council had also approved the introduction of an internship (IT) scheme as a way of exposing students to industry practices that will improve their post-graduation job opportunities.
