The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Thursday said that transmission expansions works were being implemented in at least 90 locations in furtherance of government’s efforts to improve on-grid electricity supply nationwide.
The minister made the disclosure during the commissioning of 2×100MVA – 132/33kv power transformers at Ejigbo Transmission Substation in Lagos.
Fashola said also that 690 out of 800 containers of electricity equipment abandoned at the port for 10 years by previous administrations had been recovered, thereby boosting the chances of improved power delivery in the country.
The Ejigbo Transmission Substation, which was commissioned in 1970, has an installed 60MVA capacity from two 30MVA 132/33kv transformers. Last year, the sub-station capacity was upgraded to 120MVA with the addition of a 60MVA transformer.
Speaking on the abandoned transformers at the port, the minister said that the approval to clear them for the purposes on national power infrastructure upgrade was granted by President Buhari, adding that so far 690 out of the 800 transformers have been recovered.
He explained: “President Muhammadu Buhari gave us the approval to use it and we have recovered 690. This is part of the equipment you are seeing going into substations that Transmission Company of Nigeria’s engineers used to increase substation’s capacity.
“With this expansion, the additional feeders will serve communities like Ejigbo, Idimu, Oke-Afa, Egbe, Shasha. Also, Murtala Airport will also see improved power services”, Fashola added
