The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday reported that Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) generated N5.70 billion revenue from passenger fares in 2021.
The agency gave this figure in its ‘Rail Transportation Data for 2021’ report.
According to the report, the generated revenue for the year under review is 226.44 percent increase or N3.95 billion higher than the N1.75 billion total revenue generated by the corporation in 2020.
The Bureau reported that during the year under review, over 2.7 million passengers travelled by train compared to about 1 million recorded in the previous year.
Similarly, the rail transport data report further showed that 168,301 tonnes of goods were transported by rail in 2021 compared to the 87,440 tonnes recorded in the preceding year, representing a growth of 92.48 percent.
The report further reflected that apart from revenue generated by the corporation from passenger fares it also generated N317.57 million from charges on goods in 2021, an amount higher by 12.87 percent compared to N281.35 million in 2020.
In addition, the NBS reported that other income receipts by the NRC in 2021 totalled N66.80 million, higher than the N5.19 million recorded in the preceding year.
