Fares paid by passengers that travelled by the rail system in the country in Q1 this year totaled N768.44 million, representing a 63.02% decline relative to the N2.08 billion generated as fares in the corresponding quarter of 2022
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its ‘Rail Transportation Data’ (Q1 2023) just published report hoisted on its website on Tuesday, reported that during the quarter under review 441,725 passengers travelled by rail, representing a decrease by 53.65% when compared to the 953,099 passengers that used the transportation mode in the corresponding quarter (Q1) in 2022.
The national statistical system coordinating agency disclosed that in Q1 this year, 59,966 tons of goods were transported by rail nationwide compared to 39,379 tons reported in Q1 2022.
According to the report, in 2022 the total revenue from passengers stood at N4,546,342,056, comprising N2,077,836,686 in Q1; N598,736,300 in Q2; N715,091,714 in Q3; and N1,154,677,356 in Q4.
The Bureau further clarified that N181.27 million was collected in Q1 2023 as revenue from goods/cargos, representing 99.28% surge from N90.96 million received in the corresponding quarter of last year.
A further analysis of the rail transportation data reflected that the total revenue from cargo transportation stood at N436,077,778 out of which N90,961,555 was generated in Q1; N86,007,680 in Q2; N101,884,743 in Q3; and N157,233,800 generated in the fourth quarter of the year.
Also, the NBS reported other receipts from the rail transportation during the quarter in review as totalling N34.17 million, representing a decline of 41.02%, from the N57.92 million raked in in Q1 2022.
