Worried by the disparity in their retirement benefits, retirees in the Federal civil service have decided to seek legal redress after years of discussions with the authorities on the matter did not yield any positive results.
Already, the retirees who are from the six geopolitical zones, have approached the National Industrial Court, Abuja to seek a redress on what they described as discrimination in the implementation of pension policy under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS)
Among other issues, the aggrieved retirees are challenging the alleged refusal of the Federal Government to review upward their pensions in line with provisions of Section 173 of the 1999 Constitution.
In the suit filed by Chief Chiesonu Okpoko (SAN) on their behalf, the retirees are asking the court to determine the legality and applicability of section 173 of the 1999 Constitution, Pension Acts of 2004 and 2014 and circulars issued by the Federal Government agencies relating to pension implementations.
The plaintiffs representing the six geo-political zones in the suit are Chike Ogbechie, Hajiya Fatima Ahmad, Samuel Ajayi, Dama Douglas, Olarewaju Ale, Vitas Ajaegbu, Alhaji Abubakar Giza and Alhaji Muhammed Maccido.
