The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has commended the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) for its commitment to the welfare of the workers, especially in ensuring increases in salaries of the employees.

The NPA’s Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, who gave the commendation to the union in a statement issued on Tuesday, recalled that before the latest increase of workers’ salaries by the management, the last review of the salaries was done in 2008.

Bello-Koko commended the MWUN  when he received a letter referenced MWUN/MD/NPA/RFC/23, dated March 6, signed by the Secretary General MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, expressing the workers’ appreciation to management of the NPA for the recent increment in the salaries of its members.

He stated that but for the support of the leadership of the workers’ union, it would have been difficult for the management of the authority to break the jinx of salary stagnation suffered over a decade by the authority’s employees.

He clarified: “This critical support from MWUN has buoyed us to intensify our relentless drive toward continuous improvement in the welfare of our esteemed workers in ways not limited to monthly salary alone.

“We are further delighted by the fact that our own Adeyanju is now the Deputy President of the NLC. This gives us the necessary solidarity and backing to push for more benefits for our highly valued human resources”, Bello-Koko added.

It would be recalled that the NPA boss had in November last year led a team of the NWUN involving the Secretary-General, on an advocacy visit to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to solicit the union’s support for increased salaries for NPA workers.
