The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed that as of February 28, 2025, the number of Nigerians captured in the National Identification Number (NIN) database surge to 117.3 million.
The latest NIN report published by the commission on its website represented over seven million additional registrations since September 2024, when the figure stood at 110 million.
According to the report, the February 2025 NIN data showed that 56.5% of registered individuals were male, totaling 66.2 million, while 43.5% were female, representing 51.07 million of the total registration.
An analysis of the spread of the registration based on states’ profiles showed that Lagos led with 12.6 million registrations, followed by Kano with 10.2 million, and Kaduna with 6.9 million.
Other states’ with high NIN registration include Ogun (4.9 million), Oyo (4.5 million), and Katsina (4 million), while Bayelsa (758,111), Ebonyi (990,775) recorded the lowest enrolment figures.
Over the past three years, the Federal Government, through the NIMC and in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), advised all Nigerians to enrol in the national database to link their NINs with their telephone Subscriber Identitification Modules (SIMs) to give them access essential services, including social services, financial transactions, and telecommunications.
Apart from helping the government in strengthening security and promoting transparency, the NIN-SIM linkage initiative is also designed to enhance the efficiency of service delivery across the country.
Available data on the NIN registration showed that the number of Nigerians with the NIN had been increasing over the months.
