Nigeria’s Internet Subscribers Hit 113.8Mn, Airtel, MTN Gain

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported on Friday that Internet users in the country increased marginally to over 113.8 million in January 2018, from the 111.63 million subscribers in the preceding month.

The commission, in its ‘Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for January 2019’ hoisted on its website, reported that overall internet users increased to 113,875,204 in January 2019 from the 111,632,516 recorded in December 2018, representing an increase of 2,242,688 new subscribers.

The report showed that Airtel and MTN gained more internet subscribers during the month under review, while 9mobile and Globacom lost some subscribers.

A further breakdown of the data indicated that MTN gained more with 2,031, 214 new internet users during the month, increasing its subscription to 45,931,171 as against 43,899,957 in December 2018.

The data showed also that Airtel came second, increasing its subscription to 30,460,528 in January 2019 as against 29,757,791 in the preceding month while Globacom lost 454,409 internet users, thereby reducing its subscription to 27,600,539 in January from 28,054,948 recorded in December 2018.

Similarly, the industry regulatory institution reported that 9Mobile also lost 36,854 internet users in the month under review to bring its subscribers to 9,882,966, down from the 9,919,820 recorded in December 2018.
