The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported that Nigeria’s active telecommunications services subscriptions across the Mobile Network Operators’ (MNOs’) networks increase by 15% year-on-year to N226.8 million in February this year.

The active mobile subscriptions report by commission showed that the four major MNOs’, namely MTN, Globacom, Airtel and 9mobile, subscriptions rose by 29 million last year, with the total active mobile subscription standing at 197.7 million as of February 2022.

According to the commission, when analyzed on a month-on-month basis, the active mobile subscriptions across the four networks rose by 0.42% in February with 955,539 new subscriptions over the rate in January this year.

With the latest subscription level, the nation’s teledensity, which measures the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area, rose from 118.5% in January this year to 119.01% in February.

An analysis of the NCC’s active mobile subscriptions report on network-by-network basis reflected that MTN, the largest operator by subscription number, recorded 756,847 new subscribers in February this year, thereby raising its customer database to 92.7 million from 91.9 million in the previous month.

Also, Globacom recorded 420,562 new subscribers in the month under review, thereby making the MNO to displace Airtel as the second largest operator by subscriber number in February 2023. The new activations on Globacom network raised its total subscriptions to 60.7 million from the 60.3 million it recorded in January this year.

However, the report indicated that Airtel lost some subscriptions as its customer database decreased by 263,627, thereby pushing its active subscriptions to 60.3 million from the 60.5 million it recorded in January 2023.

The commission also reported that 9mobile’s active subscriptions recorded some gain in the month under review with its database growing by 41,757. The new subscriptions increased the MNO’s customer database to 13.07 million from the 13.03 million it recorded in the previous month.
