Nigeria is currently rated among the countries with slow internet speed, ranking 89th globally, despite sundry efforts of the Federal Government to improve Nigeria’s broadband infrastructure investments over the past few years.

According to the just published industry Speedtest Global Index report from a US-based internet speed analysis company, Ookla, Nigeria moved up to the 89th position from the 93rd it occupied last December out of the 169 countries covered by the report, indicating some slight improvement in the nation’s internet download speed.

However, when analyzed based on the January 2021 survey, the country just moved up by one position from the 90th place it occupied then.

According to the latest index, the nation’s average mobile download speed increased to 22.78Mbps in January this year from the 21.54Mbps it recorded in December 2022 while the latency remained unchanged at 31ms.

A further analysis of the report showed that Nigeria’s download speed ranked 7th in Africa coming very far behind South Africa, which ranked top in Africa but ranked 54th globally with a 31.74Mbps average download speed.

The SGI report also reflected that Morocco came second in Africa and 63rd globally with average download speed of 32.10Mbps followed by Togo, which ranked 63rd globally with average download speed of 30.26Mbps.

The report also indicated that Uganda ranked in the  4th position in Africa and 75th globally; Mauritius, ranked 5th in Africa and 80th globally and Egypt ranked 6th in Africa and 86th globally on average download speed in the month under review.

The SGI index’s findings showed that in terms of fixed broadband speed, Nigeria moved up just by one position in January, ranking 144th out of the 179 countries covered by the SGI report.
