Users of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) paid an average retail price of N7,418.45 for refilling a 5kg cylinder of the commodity in May this year, representing 70.12% higher than the N4,360.69 they bought in May 2023.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (May 2024)’ report published on Wednesday, however, disclosed that the average retail price of the item increased by 13.75% on a month-on-month basis from N6,521.58 recorded in April 2024.
On state profile analysis, the report showed that Benue buyers paid the highest month-on-month average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at N8,012.03, followed by Enugu at N7,926.21, and Ondo consumers who paid N7,857.53 for the same volume of the item in the month under review.
The statistics agency reported that on the other hand, Yobe users bought at the lowest price at N5,842.31, followed by Jigawa and Katsina users who paid N6,521.81 and N6,567.95 respectively for a 5kg cylinder of gas.
In addition, the data when analyzed by zone showed that the South-East buyers bought the same volume of the item at the highest average retail price of N7,680.87, followed by their South-West counterparts that paid N6,593.93 while the North-East users bought at the lowest average price of N7,071.84.
The Bureau further reported that in May this year, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas on a year-on-year basis rose by 63.85% from N9,537.89 in May 2023.
However, the report reflected that the price declined by 0.07% on a month-on-month basis from N15,637.74 in April this to N15,627.40 in May 2024.
On state profile analysis, Zamfara buyers paid the highest average retail price for the refilling of a 12.5kg of the item at N18,369.33, followed by Bayelsa and Abia consumers that bought at the average price of N17,772.21 and N17,538.02 respectively.
The statistics agency disclosed that conversely, the lowest average price was recorded in Bauchi where buyers paid N13,076.43 for the same volume in May this year, followed by Ebonyi and Taraba users that bought at N13,788.09 and N13,860.31 respectively.
A further analysis of the report’s data by zone showed that the South-South users paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of the commodity at N16,310.02, followed by their North-West counterparts that refilled with N15,991.13 while the North-East buyers paid the lowest price of N15,010.62 for refilling the same volume of gas.
