The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has again boosted its sustained initiatives to enhance internet connectivity with the licensing of six new Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for operations in the country.

The licensing of the ISPs, which is reflected in the commission’s licensing database, is expected to  deepen competition in a rapidly evolving market in which satellite operators, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, new entrants – Amazon’s Leo, formerly Project Kuiper, and BeetleSat-1, and big four Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) –  MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, are jostling for big market share.

According to the commission’s licensing database, the new ISP licencees are Intellvision Technologies Limited, Granet Technologies Limited, Fiber Sonic Limited, Dasol Solution Services Ltd, Boost ISP Limited, and Amazon Kuiper Nigeria Limited.

The latest licensing data showed that with the entrance of the new ISPs into the market, the total number of the nation’s ISPs rose to 231 from 225 in December 2025.

The data also indicated that most licensed ISPs remained clustered in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, reflecting high demand for internet-powered services in major commercial and administrative cities in the country.

It would be recalled that the data published by the NCC in Q2, 2025 showed that  Starlink, Spectranet, and FibreOne accounted for 65% of customers actively connected to ISPs and out of 125 licensed ISPs then, only 133 reported active customer connections, totalling 313,713 users.

The active customer connection rate revealed that  Spectranet remained the largest ISP with 99,520 active customers, compared with Starlink’s 66,523 in Q2, while FibreOne came third with 37,117 customers.

Industry analysts believe that with new licences issued by the NCC to the six new entities, competitive pressures in the ISP market are expected to intensify with the attendant implications for improved investment in critical infrastructure for quality services to telecoms subscribers in the country.
