The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned Nigerians about the dangers associated with purchasing pre-registered SIM cards and advised telecom subscribers to avoid buying such cards from anyone.
The Commission, in a statement issued on Thursday, emphasized the illegality of this practice and highlighted the severe consequences, including imprisonment, for those involved.
For instance, the telecom sector regulator pointed out that individuals using pre-registered SIM cards could unknowingly become involved in various crimes, such as identity theft, financial fraud, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
In addition, the commission stressed that the use of these SIM cards compromised the accuracy of consumer information, making it difficult for authorities to track down criminals effectively.
It, therefore, advised telecom services subscribers in the country to strictly adhere to legal guidelines to enhance national security and avoid the dire consequences of purchasing or using pre-registered SIM cards.
