…Extends Second 800MHz Licence By 4 Yrs
The Nigerian Communications Commission has approved the renewal of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc’s first 800MHz spectrum band license (Channel 1) for an additional 10 years of operations in the country.
The leading Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in a corporate notice filed on the Nigeria Exchange Limited (NGX) on Tuesday, stated the renewal took effect from January 1 this year and would run until December 31, 2034.
Similarly, the telco confirmed that the telecom industry regulatory commission also approved the extension of its second 800MHz spectrum band license (Channel 2), which was set to expire on 31 December 2030, adding four years to its validity for operations, thereby aligning its expiration date with Channel 1 on December 31, 2034.

The harmonisation of the spectrum licenses by the NCC is aimed at streamlining the renewal process in the future.
The Notice partly reads: “MTN Nigeria Communications PLC (MTN Nigeria or the ‘Company’) hereby notifies Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the renewal of its first 800MHz Spectrum band licence (Channel 1) for an additional ten years, effective from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2034.”
Commenting on the approvals by the NCC, MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, enthused: “We are pleased with the successful renewal and harmonisation of our 800 MHz spectrum licenses, which lay a solid foundation for the ongoing delivery of 4G services to our customers. This enables us to continue to meet the demand for data and is integral to our broader strategy for enhancing connectivity.”
