The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has sent a Notice To Airmen (NOTAM) to airline operators and other stakeholders on its plans to repair some portions of the international runway of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
The agency, in the notice NOTAM on the runway, which is also known as 18R/36L, stated that it would be shut down on Monday and on Tuesday for the repair of some of its portions.
Specifically, the NOTAM informed airlines and other stakeholders that the runway would be closed from 000-0500 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time); that is between 1:00 am to 6:00 am Nigerian time.
It would be recalled that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the agency in charge of management of airports in the country, had planned to repair some portions of the runway, due to the deplorable portions, but NAMA is issuing the NOTAM to stakeholders on the runway pursuant to its statutory mandate.
Aviation industry experts say that even if no flights is expected to arrive or take off during the period the runway would be closed, the standard operating procedures require the issuance of NOTAM so that the global air transport industry will be aware of the status of the runway during that period, in case of a flight emergency.
