MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, a leading Mobile Network Operator (MNO), has disclosed that it has secured approval from the Nigerian Communications Commissions (NCC), to lease additional spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited as a strategic step to enhance its network capacity and improve telecom services in the country.

The management of the telecom company indicated that based on the commission’s approval, the lease agreement would take effect from October 1, 2025 to cover 5MHz Frequency Dividion Duplex, FDD in the 900MHz band and 15MHz Frequency, FDD in the 1800MHz band for a duration of three years.

It maintained that the spectrum lease remained a vital enabler for the MNO’s national roaming agreement with T2 Mobile, allowing MTN to effectively manage increased network traffic generated by T2’s customer base on its infrastructure.

Commenting on the deal,  CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, enthused: “We are delighted with this milestone, which aligns with our Ambition 2025 strategy. By leveraging additional spectrum resources, we are enhancing network capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable manner.

This strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, high-quality connectivity while fostering innovation and industry collaboration”, he added.

The company’s management pointed out that the spectrum lease from T2 Mobile demonstrated the company’s belief in shaping a more sustainable telecommunication ecosystem, stressing that collaboration including the onboarding Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) and signing a national roaming deal with T2, are part of its efforts to broaden access to high-speed broadband and drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Meanwhile, the MNO’s management has confirmed that it will not renew its one-year spectrum lease agreement, which will expire on November 29 this year, with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which currently provides access to 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states.

It stated: “Our strategy remains centered on investing in infrastructure, forging strong partnerships, and deploying innovative technologies that support inclusive growth and deliver superior value to Nigerians.

“These steps are not only about expanding coverage but also about empowering communities and businesses with the tools to thrive in a digital economy”, the management added.

With over 84 million subscriber base, MTN Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest telecom operators and has been leveraging its huge investments in infrastructure, innovation, and partnerships to enhance its services in the country.

Industry experts believe that the MNO’s  integrated approach of combining spectrum trading with roaming services reflects its broader strategy of driving collaboration, optimizing infrastructure, and advancing digital inclusion.
