The Institute for Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) today inaugurated a new Chapter in the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAuGF)
The initiative was part of the Institute’s efforts to enhance the work of the Office and close the communication gap between it and practising professionals in the office.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Auditor-General for the Federation, Mr. Anthony Mkpe Ayine, charged professional accountants to maintain the ideals of the institute which are hinged on accuracy and integrity at all times, while carrying out assignments.
He said: “As a Chapter, we are like foot soldiers to facilitate to fruition, the programmes of ICAN, as well as carry out public enlightenment within our domain. Always remember our motto – Accuracy and Integrity. We must allow these to reflect in whatever we are doing.”
Ayine also commended the 53rd President of the Institute, Mallam Ismaila Zakari, for making the inauguration of the chapter a reality and assured him that the Chapter would remain committed to upholding the principles and standards of ICAN.
In his address, the ICAN President, who was represented by Mallam Tijjani Musa Isa, said the creation of the OAuGF Chapter of the Institute, would improve access to information about ICAN and the profession generally
Zakari pointed out that the central objective for the Institute’s creation of Chapters was to meet the needs of professional accountants and to bring the activities of ICAN closer to all professional accountants, without being disadvantaged for any reason whatsoever.
He explained that the creation of the Chapter came with great responsibility for the Office, particularly in the areas of compliance to the Code of Ethics of the profession and the Rules of Professional Conduct for members and urged fellows not to mortgage their conscience or compromise the principles of the profession for temporary gains.
He also commended the Auditor-General and his team for the giant strides recorded in the promotion of accountability and transparency in the management of public funds and proceeded to administer the oath of allegiance on the Acting Chairman of the Chapter, Elder Adewale Owolo.
