Worried by the increasing rate of damages to critical infrastructure by vandals nationwide, the Federal Government on Wednesday released an official gazette titled ‘Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024’ which seeks to protect Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) in the nation’s telecommunications sector.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani, made this disclosure through his X handle and commended President Bola Tinubu for the bold step aimed at securing the sector’s assets

Tijani, in his X handle, stated: “I would like to appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the release of the official gazette, ‘Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024′.

According to him, the official gazette is a significant step that will strengthen and protect investments in the ICT sector by reducing incidences capable of damaging the operations and functionality of our technological systems, infrastructure and networks.

Tijani noted that the security and protection of the CNII remained a priority of the Tinubu-led administration and would help to enhance the quality of telecoms services nationwide.

He pointed out that the gazette now made it an offence to intentionally damage assets such as telco towers/sites, switch stations, data centres, satellite infrastructure, submarine and fibre optic cables, transmission equipment, e-government platforms, and databases, among other key assets in the industry.
