In furtherance of its sustained drive towards environment-friendly automobile space in the country, the Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled a new portal for conversion of fossil fuel conversion to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) with the owners given the option of converting their vehicles and paying instalmentally over months.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) confirmed the initiative in a statement posted on its official X handle.
According to the agency, the payment options allowed fuel-powered vehicle owners to convert the vehicles to CNG and pay on monthly instalments on agreed terms at competitive rates.
The post on the X handle partly reads: “Switching to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is now more accessible than ever. With flexible payment plans tailored to fit your budget, transitioning from petrol to CNG has never been smoother or more affordable. These payment options allow you to convert your vehicle now and pay later with affordable monthly instalments at competitive rates.
“With an easy online application and quick approval process, you’ll receive support every step on the way to ensure a hassle-free experience.
“Visit: gocng.ng to get started”, the agency added.
It would be recalled that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) was introduced to promote renewable energy option for transportation nationwide following the removal of petrol subsidy by the President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023 on his assumption of office.
Since the launch of the PCNGi, the government, in collaboration with the state governments, has established some CNG conversion stations across the country to facilitate fossil fuel-powered vehicles to the CNG model.
For instance, as part of the implementation drive, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the PCNGi and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to convert vehicles in the Abuja-Itakpe Station to Adavi route to CNG-powered automobiles, with a view to reducing transport fare along the route by between 30%-40% per trip.
Only last week, PCNGi announced the distribution of 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles to youths in the transportation sector nationwide effective from October 1.
The distribution of the CNG-powered tricycles is a collaborative effort of the PCNGi and the Federal Ministry of Youths to create employment opportunity for young Nigerians in the transportation sector and by implication, help in advancing the environmental goals of the initiative.
