FG Inaugurates Technical Committee On Teachers’ Training, Support

The Federal Government has established a nine-man technical committee on teachers’ training and support as a strategic means of transforming the nation’s education system.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, spoke on the inauguration of the committee after a meeting with UNESCO Country Representative in Nigeria, Mr Abdourahamane Diallo, in his office in Abuja.

According to the minister, the committee members include education experts, UNESCO representatives, and key stakeholders  with responsibility of evaluating, enhancing current training programmes, as well as designing and implementing new modules .

By its mandate, the committee is to deliver quality education  through the teacher support and training for basic and secondary schools as well as review existing policies, practices  across the education value chain.

Mamman said: “Teachers are the backbone of our education system. This committee will provide them with world-class training and support, elevating education quality.”

The minister further hinted that the Ministry would soon start a new curriculum for basic education that will inculcate education and skill which requires training and retraining for teachers in skill development.

In his remarks, Diallo restated UNESCO’s commitment to Nigeria’s development, and stressed the committee’s importance in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing key education policies.

Noting the organisation’s commitment is required to support the ministry in development of policies for the teachers, the UNESCO chief explained that there would be a blueprint, which covers digital skills, working conditions, etc that will guide teachers training programmes for review and assessment.

Diallo further clarified:  ”This initiative marks a major step in the government’s efforts to reform education, with initial findings expected within six months.”
