The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) disclosed on Thursday that Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) delivered additional 308,106 meters to their customers between May and June 2026, thereby demonstrating their commitment to transparent billing system in the power sector.
The national electricity industry regulatory commission in its latest ‘Metering Status of Distribution Companies Factsheet for May and June June 2026’ also confirmed that as of the end June this year, the total active customers increase by 0.55 percent to 12.59 million, up from the 12.52 million recorded in May 2026.
According to the commission, at the end of June 2026, the total metered customers stood at 7,743,839, leaving roughly 4.85 million customers still unmetered.
It stated that the latest data on the metering of customers reflected the continued progress in customer metering across the country as the DisCos continued to work to close the metering gap and reduce reliance on estimated billing.

A further analysis of the metering efforts of the DisCos on the factsheet showed that the top three in terms of meter distribution comprised Eko Disco, which recorded the highest with an 88.70 per cent metering rate, followed by Ikeja Electric with 87.91 per cent metering rate, while Abuja Disco recorded an 81.38 per cent metering rate in the periof under review.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had reported that 60% of active electricity customers had been metered nationwide with an ongoing rollout under Phase 1 of the $500 million World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).
Under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) being coordinated by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), the government’s objective is to remarkably bridge the electricity metering gap with a view to ending the estimated billing regime for registered electricity customers in the country.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Ayodeji Gbeleyi, who gave an update on the implementation of the initiative recently disclosed that government was making the desired progress on the project.
The BPE boss explained: “We have implemented 60 per cent of the meters that have been delivered in the country out of 1,033,000. So far, we have deployed and installed 668,000 meters on customers’ premises.”
Similarly, while commenting on the progress made on the PMI so far, the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, assured electricity customers that government had been working “concertedly and in a very collaborative manner to ensure that we give value, either in electricity or in telecoms—whichever area—to make sure that Nigerians benefit from this government’’.
