Users of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) in the country paid higher for the commodity in September when compared to the prices they paid in the preceding month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has reported.
The statistics agency, in its ‘September 2023 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch’ report published on Thursday, disclosed that the average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by 1.81% month-on-month, rising from N4,115.32 in August 2023 to N4,189.96 in September 2023.
Also, for the larger 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas, the average retail price increased by 0.58% on a monthly basis, rising from N9,194.41 in the preceding month to N9,247.40 in September this year.
According to the report, however, when assessed on year-on-year basis, there was a decrease of 6.36% in the 5kg cylinder of cooking gas from the N4,474.48 it exchange at in September 2022 just as the 12.5kg cylinder of the commodity also decreased by 6.65% on a year-on-year basis from the N9,906.44 buyers paid for it in September 2022
A further analysis of the NBS’ Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch’ report for the month under review on state-by-state prices showed that Kwara users paid the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas at N4,866.60 in September this year, followed by Benue’s at N4,789.26 and Adamawa who paid N4,785.71.
On the flip side, Ondo consumers paid the lowest price at N3,364.62 for the 5kg cylinder of cooking gas, while Ekiti buyers and Edo buyers followed at N3,450.06 and N3,626.17, respectively.
On region-by-region basis, the North-Central users paid had the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas, averaging N4,555.95, followed by the North-West buyers who paid N4,394.40, while the South-West recorded the lowest price at N3,809.22.
The statistics agency’s report further clarified that Cross River users paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas, standing at N10,203.13, followed by Ogun users, who paid N9,967.11 and Nasarawa’s at N9,950.15.
Conversely, the lowest average price paid by consumers was recorded in Adamawa at N7,604.29, followed by Borno and Gombe at N8,113.69 and N8,188.75, respectively.
On a regional basis, the South-South buyers of the commodity paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder, with an average of N9,613.55 during the month under review. The South-East users followed, paying N9,393.69 for the same volume while the North-East buyers paid the lowest price at N8,683.62.
