Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) reported at the weekend that total registration for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) by bank customers in the country had increased to 61.16 million
The NIBSS, in a report hoisted on its website indicated that as of last Friday, the BVN registrants totaled 61,166,384.
In its earlier report published this year, the NIBSS, the Nigerian Central Switch providing services to the players in mobile payments to enable them interoperate with banks and other financial institutions, disclosed that as of January 26, the BVN figures stood at 59.9 million.
The latest report by the System showed that there had been 674,280 new registrations for BVN between late January and mid-March.
Over the past two year, the monetary and other regulatory authorities in the country have continued to stress the need for Nigerians to register their BVNs and link their accounts and phone numbers with their SIMs.
For instance, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently extended the BVN-SIM linkage to March 31 this year even as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also directed banks in the country to ensure that their customers’ BVN are also linked with their National Identity Numbers (NINs)
