Former President Muhammadu Buhari last Friday signed the Institute of Directors Nigeria’s (IoD’s), Charter Bill earlier passed by the National Assembly as part of his last minute executive actions before bowing out from office after eight years tenure.
With his signing of the bill, the Institute is now to be known and referred to as Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria.
Commenting on the enactment of the Bill, the President of the Institute and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Ije Jidenma, said: “This has confirmed the leading status of the Institute as the apex body upholding sound corporate governance practices and ethical standards in Nigeria.
“By this singular act, the Institute has assumed a Charter status, conferring on it the responsibility to organise and deliver director development training and corporate governance practices in Nigeria”, he added.
Jidenma commended the 9th National Assembly and the immediate past president for following through the process that culminated in the enactment of the IoD’s law, describing the enactment of the bill, after many years of efforts, as a befitting 40th anniversary gift to the Institute.
The IoD President also thanked the past and current leaders of the Institute for their contributions to the realisation of this great feat.
According to him, they have worked tirelessly to promote the principles of good corporate governance and have helped to establish the Institute as a respected and influential organisation in Nigeria and beyond.
Jidenma assured: “As an Institute, we shall remain committed to strengthening Director’s capacity and contributing our quota to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy.”
