In line with the directive of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), deposit money banks (DMBs) and other financial institutions (OFIs) have from today discontinued charges for USSD banking services will no longer be deducted from customers’ bank account accounts.
A notice from one of the leading DMBs sent to its customers dated June 3, 2025, indicated that going forward, the USSD banking services charges would be deducted directly from the customers’ mobile airtime balance in accordance with the NCC’s End-User Billing (EUB) model.
According to the lender, under this new billing regime, each USSD session will attract a charge of N6.98 per 120 seconds, which will be billed by the customer mobile network operator.
The bank added that a customer will receive a consent prompt at the start of each session, and airtime will only be deducted upon his or her confirmation and availability of the bank to fulfil this service.
It clarified further that if a customer did not wish to continue using USSD banking under this new model, such customer may choose to discontinue use of the USSD channel by choosing alternative digital banking options, such as the bank’s mobile app and internet banking platform for real time transactions.
The bank assured its customers of its commitment to delivering secure, accessible, and customer-friendly banking services.
