The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), has issued an advisory to industry stakeholders concerning the damage to multiple submarine fibre optic cables along the West Africa Coast, which have affected adversely data access and internet services in the sub-region.
The association, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and Executive Secretary, Gbolahan Awonuga, lamented the inconveniences caused by the damaged submarine fibre optic cables to stakeholders in the industry, particularly telecom subscribers, and assured that efforts were ongoing to fix the damaged cables
The statement reads: “We wish to inform the general public on behalf of some members of our association that some subscribers may be experiencing challenges with accessing data services and low Internet speed: this is due to the impact of multiple damage to the International undersea cables across East and West Africa coast line which occurred sometime today 14:03:2024 outside the shore of Nigeria.
“This unfortunate development has impacted on Data and Internet service delivery by some of our members.
“We highly regret any inconveniences caused by the damage to the submarine fibre optics cable in the international waterways.
“We wish to assure the users of communication services that repair process is ongoing by the responsible international service providers and services should be fully resolved soonest”, the association added.
It offered apologies for all inconveniences arising from the impact of the damage and resulting outage on behalf of all its affected members, and solicited the continuous understanding of all stakeholders in the industry on the hitches.
