The Chairman of National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), Mr. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, on Friday dispelled the impression by people that telecom mast radiation is risky, pointing out that there is no health risk associated with erecting telecoms mast in residential areas.

The NATCOMS’ leader was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as saying that Electro Magnetic Frequency (EMF) radiation from telecoms mast is not harmful to humans around the mast based on researchers’ findings.

Specifically, Ogunbanjo recalled the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007 conducted several researches and submitted that masts erected in residential areas had no negative effect on the health of humans and animals.

To improve the quality of telecom services nationwide, the industry top stakeholder canvassed the need for operators to invest more on key infrastructure, particularly in telecom masts in the country.

He expatiated: “Everywhere in the world, mast must be erected, and WHO said the emissions from the mast is not enough to cause any damage and since 2007 there have been no issues.

“The telecoms industry should provide more masts so that the quality of service will be improved for the subscribers to enjoy better services.

“According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the low intensity of cell site emissions is estimated to be between 0.002 per cent and 2 per cent of the levels of safe exposure, and is lower than those produced by a radio or TV transmission”, Ogunbanjo stressed.
