The organised labour group today made good its threat to picket the National Assembly in protest against alleged moves by the Legislature to amend the Minimum Wage section in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The Legislature is accused by the labour group as considering the option of removing the Minimum Wage section from the Exclusive list to Concurrent list.
In fulfillment of its notice issued on Tuesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) members gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja from where they later marched to the junction linking the Three Arms Zone with the metropolis.
The industrial action caused major traffic gridlock as motorists plying the Aso Villa, Federal Secretariat, the National Assembly, and the Supreme Court roads.
As expected, some of the protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘We Say No To Oppressive Laws’; ‘No To Minimum Wage on Concurrent List’, ‘Yes To Minimum Wage on Exclusive List’ and many more.
