Lawmakers in Ondo State House of Assembly have assured workers and leaders of the Organised labour in the state that they would not support any bill seeking the removal of minimum wage from the Exclusive legislative list of the nation’s constitution.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Bamidele Oloyelogun gave the assurance in Akure when a letter by the labour leaders, led by the NLC state chairman, Sunday Adeleye, was delivered during a protest to his office.
The lawmaker pointed out that “the wage bill if passed, will further impoverish Nigerians workers”, assuing that “Ondo State lawmakers will ensure that minimum wage is not put in the concurrent list.”
Earlier, the NLC chairman and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Helen Odofin, had complained that moving minimum wage to concurrent list would translate to enslavement of Nigerian workers.
The labour leaders, therefore, urged the lawmakers to reject the bill if transmitted to Ondo State.
The workers, who carried placards with various inscriptions, had early in the morning started their protest against the proposed constitutional amendment moves by National Assembly legislators from the Reuben Fasoranti Park , Alagbaka Akure to the State House of Assembly complex, located in Igbatoro Road of the state capital.
