The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has put the total active mobile phone lines in the country at 146 million in January this year, representing an increase of 2,233,467 lines over active lines in December 2017.
The figures were contained in the Commission’s monthly Subscribers Operator Data posted on its website.
The Commission reported that the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) phone lines remained unchanged from the December 2017 of 217,566 users in the month under review while the fixed wired/wireless lines dropped to 137,262 in January as against 139,344 active lines in the preceding month.
The telecom industry regulating body also reported that the number of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) rose to 76, 371 in January from 70,926 in December 2017, indicating an increase of 5, 445.
Similarly, the teledensity also showed some month-on-month improvement in January at 105.21 compared with 103.61 recorded in December 2017. Teledensity is the number of telephone connections for every 100 individuals living within an area and it varies widely across the country.
The Commission’s Subscribers Operator Data also showed that the number of connected mobile lines in the month under review increased to 237,755,757, representing an increase of 828,260 over the 236,927,497 lines in December 2017,
In addition, it stated that the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) for connected lines for January stood at 3,586,095, the same figure recorded in the preceding month.
The NCC’s data indicated that the number of fixed wired/wireless for connected lines in January was 345,195 compared to 346,107 in December 2017, showing a decrease of 912 lines.
It also puts the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) for connected lines for the month in review as 523,298 compared with the 472, 844,752 connected lines in December.
