Kaduna State Government has announced tax waiver for teachers in public primary and secondary school teachers in the state effective from next month until the new teachers’ salary structure comes into effect.

Giving the hint during a media chat Thursday, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Malam Jafaru Sani, said with the policy stance, government would from March 2018 no longer deduct Pay As You Earn (PAYE) from the teachers’ salaries before the new salary structure becomes effective.

A news report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the commissioner as saying that the new salary structure was being worked out by the Offices of Head of Service and the Accountant General as well as the Finance Ministry.

Sani clarified: “This is a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers. With this tax waiver, I am sure that the quality of life of our teachers will greatly improve, until the new salary structure takes effect anytime soon.”

The commissioner also hinted that state’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) would soon issue appointment letters to about 15,000 successful applicants for teaching jobs.

It would be recalled that the state government had on February 1, unveiled plans to increase teachers’ salary by 32.5 per cent and other incentives as a strategic option of making the teaching profession attractive.
