As part of its sustained efforts to enhance the reportorial and analytical skills of journalists on emerging trends in telecommunications and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday flagged off two-day training for journalists in Lagos.
The commission indicated that the capacity-building programme was designed to keep the trainees, who were drawn from a broad spectrum of the media, abreast of emerging trends, regulatory measures and other initiatives targeted at ensuring a more robust telecommunications industry’s news reporting and analysis by the journalists.
The training, which focused on data journalism, visualization, news gathering techniques, and an overview of the Nigerian telecom industry, was organized to deepen the participants’ understanding and improve the quality of reporting in the rapidly evolving telecoms space.
It featured different sessions facilitated by senior officials from selected departments of the commission and other experts in relevant fields.
In his opening address at the event, In his opening remarks, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Mouka, explained that the training was in line with the vision of the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, to ensure that its stakeholders, particularly media partners continue to learn, re-learn and are equipped with relevant knowledge and skill sets required to do their jobs more efficiently.
The Director further clarified that the training reflected the commission’s commitment to transparency and openness in terms of its activities in the industry.
He said: “This event offers media stakeholders an opportunity to gain updated skills, ensuring they remain informed partners in our efforts to communicate industry developments and expectations.”
The training also featured interactive question-and-answer sessions which enabled participants to engage directly with industry experts and NCC representatives, thereby reinforcing the sustained cordial relationship between the commission and journalists in awareness campaigns about emerging developments and regulatory initiatives of the NCC in the nation’s telecom sector.
