Nigeria: Kerosene Price Rises By 20.26% Y-o-Y In May

The average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene (HHK) increased by 20.26% to N1,450.35 in May this year compared to the N1,206.05 users paid in the corresponding month of last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported.

The Bureau gave these figures in its  ‘National Household Kerosene Price Watch (May 2024)’ report published on Wednesday, clarifying that on a month-on-month basis, the average retail price per litre of the item increased by 0.74% compared to N1,439.64 recorded consumers bought it in April 2024

The report indicated that when analyzed on state-by-state basis, the highest average price per litre in May 2024 was recorded in Benue with N1,790.92, followed by Kaduna with N1,769.65 and Cross River with N1,722.94.

On the other hand, the report showed that lowest price per litre of HHK was paid by consumers in Katsina at N1,230.81, followed by Kwara and Jigawa users who paid N1,260.07 and  N1,263.91 respectively for the same volume of the item in the month under review.

In addition, analysis by zone reflected that the North Central buyers paid the highest average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene at N1,534.12, followed by their South-West counterparts, who bought at N1,488.97, while the North-East consumers paid the lowest average price per litre at N1,408.41.

The Bureau further reported that average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene paid by consumers in May 2024 rose to N5,196.69, indicating an increase of 0.43% from N5,174.23 recorded in the preceding month.

It clarified that on a year-on-year basis, the average price of the commodity increased by 23.49% from N4,208.27 in May 2023, adding that on state profile analysis, Kano consumers paid the highest average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene at N6,900.28, followed by Adamawa and Yobe users that bought the same volume at N6,295.63 and N6,140.17 respectively.

On the other hand, the report reflected that Kwara consumers paid the lowest average price of N4,235.42 per gallon, followed by Delta and Akwa Ibom  buyers who paid N4,320.39 and N4,362.81 respectively.

Analysis of the data on zone-by-zone basis showed that the North-East buyers paid the highest average retail price per gallon of the commodity at N5,951.06, followed by the North West users who bought at N5,560.03, while the North-Central consumers paid the lowest average price of N4,659.73.
