5Kg Cooking Gas Price Rises By 12% Y-o-Y In January 2024

The average retail price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) increased to N5,139.25 in January this year, representing 12.00% increase from N4,588.75 it sold at in the corresponding month of last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported.

The Bureau, in its ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (January 2024)’ published on Wednesday, disclosed that on a month-on-month basis, the commodity’s price inched up by 3.55% from N4,962.87 consumers paid for the volume in December 2023.

The statistics agency clarified that when analyzed on state profile, Nassarawa consumers paid the highest average price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of the commodity with N5,790.00, followed by Jigawa buyers who purchased at N5,681.82, and Gombe users who paid N5,660.00 in the month under review.

According to the report, on the other hand, Kaduna buyers paid the lowest price of N4,150.00 for the 5Kg cylinder gas, followed by Ogun and Osun states’ consumers who paid N4,751.04 and N4,763.53 respectively for the same volume of cooking gas in January this year.

In addition, analysis by zone showed that the North-East zone recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg Cylinder cooking gas at N5,296.32, followed by the North-Central buyers who paid N5,240.36, while their South-West counterparts purchased at the lowest price of N4,805.05.

Similarly, the Bureau reported that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg Cylinder of the commodity increased by 1.96% on a month-on-month basis from N11,510.16 in December 2023 to N11,735.72 in January this year while on a year-on -year basis, the price rose by 14.19% from N10,277.17 consumers bought it in January 2023.

On state profile analysis, the report indicated that Cross River buyers paid the highest average retail price for the refilling of a 12.5kg Cylinder of cooking gas at N13,040.00, followed by Jigawa consumers who paid N12,875.00 and Zamfara users who purchased the same volume of the commodity at N12,725.00.

Conversely, the lowest average price paid for the 12.5kg Cylinder of cooking gas in the month under review was recorded in Kaduna with N9,699.50, followed by Kwara and Niger with N10,000.00 and N10,400.00 respectively.

A further analysis of the report’s data reflected that the South-South zone consumers paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg Cylinder of the commodity with N12,602.47, followed by the North-West users that purchased at N12,224.93, while the South-West users paid the lowest price at N11,189.02.
