The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that the total number of road traffic crashes dropped to 2,187 in Q3 2023, from 3,412 in the corresponding quarter of last year, indicating a decrease of 35.90% year-on-year.
The latest report by the Nigeria’s statistics coordinating agency titled ‘Road Transport Data Q3 2023’ published on its website on Tuesday indicated that when compared with the 2,967 incidents recorded in the preceding quarter, the rate of traffic crashes decreased by 26.29% month-on-month.
According to the published data, of all crashes, serious cases topped the assessment table in Q3 2023 with 1,419 compared to fatal and minor cases with 532 and 236 respectively.
The Bureau reported that the three categories of cases recorded a decline, fatal declined by 29.63%, serious declined by 26.06% and minor cases declined by 19.18% in the quarter under review relative to the preceding quarter.
On gender distribution of the casualties, the report reflected that a total of 743 males were killed in the quarter under review, accounting for 81.83% of 908 persons that died in the mishaps, compared to 165 (18.17%) females killed.
The Bureau clarified that a total of 4,625 males were injured during the period, or 76.56% of 6,041 injured persons compared to 1,416 (23.44%) females injured.
The report showed that a total of 3,371 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q3 2023, which was lower when compared to the previous quarter’s 4,615 crashes, indicating a decrease of 26.96%.
The statistics agency further clarified that when analyzed on zonal basis, the North-Central recorded the highest number of crashes in Q3 2023 with 880, followed by the South-West with 600, while the South-South recorded the least incidents with 107.
As expected, the Bureau disclosed that the North-Central recorded the highest number of casualties with 2,548, followed by the South -West with 1,802, while the South-South recorded the least with 281.
