The immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been accused of illegally lodging billions of Naira into 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China without the approval of the apex bank’s board of directors and the CBN Investment Committee.
The Special Investigator on the CBN and Related Entities, Mr. Jim Obaze, specifically accused the former CBN Governor of lodging £543, 482,213 in fixed deposits in UK banks alone without approval by the President of the country and the Board of the bank as statutorily required by law.
Obaze made these disclosures in his final report tagged, ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable offences)’ submitted to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.
The report partly reads, “The former governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele invested Nigeria’s money without authorization in 593 foreign bank accounts in United States, China and United Kingdom, while he was in charge.
“All the accounts where the billions were lodged have all been traced by the investigator”, the Investigator added.
For instance, the investigator reportedly found that the former President Muhammadu Buhari did not the Naira redesign project but he proceeded to implement it.
The report also reflected several instances of the former apex bank Governor’s sundry disbursements on projects and contracts without passing through the approval processes as required by the monetary guidelines and legislations.
