The Federal Government has disclosed that the first batch of the transformers under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) is expected to start arriving Nigeria from September this year.

The disclosure followed Siemens’, the world’s leading firm focusing on the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization, certification that the mega transformers had met its factory acceptance test conducted at its factory in Trento Italy.

The Managing Director of  Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company (FGN-Power), Mr. Kenny Anuwe, gave this hint on 28 July 2022 when he led a delegation of top government officials to witness the factory acceptance test in Trento Italy.

Prior to the acceptance test, the Minister of Power, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, led a Federal Government’s delegation to Germany in April, during which he visited Siemens’ energy factories in Berlin and Frankfurt, and held meetings with the top officials of the power company.

Aliyu then urged Siemens to fast-track the delivery of the early orders that will kick start the transformation of Nigeria’s electricity.

Reacting to the latest acceptance test result of the transformers, the minister said: “The successful factory acceptance test shows Nigeria’s engagement with Siemens Energy is on track. It also shows federal government’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.”

It would be recalled that last December, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs.  Zainab Ahmed, and the Minister got the approval of the Federal Executive Council of €63 million for the procurement of equipment to boost power supply under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

Under its first phase, the PPI is designed to modernise, rehabilitate and expand the national grid by investing in the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution systems.

Specifically, it will provide 10 mobile power sub-stations and 10 mega transformers for deployment as part of government’s initiatives to boost electricity supply nationwide.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in 2018 initiated the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) that will enable Siemens Energy to upgrade the nation’s electricity system.
