Consumers Pay 42.97% Higher For 5Kg Cooking Gas In March

Users of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) paid an average retail price of N6,591.62 in March for refilling a 5kg Cylinder of the commodity, representing an increase by 42.97% from N4,610.48 they paid for the same volume in March 2023

On a month-on-month basis, the average price paid the users indicated 7.10% increase from N6,154.50 they paid in the preceding month.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) gave these figures in its ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (March 2024)’ published last Friday.

The statistics agency reported that on state-by-state profile, Kano consumers paid the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Cooking Gas with N7,609.00, followed by their Ogun and Akwa Ibom counterparts, who paid N7,363.64 and N7,162.50 respectively for the commodity in the month under review.

On the other hand, the Bureau reported that Adamawa buyers paid the lowest average price for the same volume of the item at N5,312.50, followed by Taraba and Zamfara users who paid N5,375.00 and N5,550.00 respectively.

In addition, the report further indicated that when analysed on zonal basis, South-South buyers paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder Cooking Gas at N7,003.08, followed by the South-West users who bought it at N6,723.22 while the North-East users paid the lowest price of N6,221.30.

Similarly, the NBS stated that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Cooking Gas increased by 5.77% on a month-on-month basis from N15,060.38 in February 2024 to N15,929.04 in March 2024.

According to the report, on a year-on-year basis, the average price for the 12.5kg cylinder volume rose by 55.22% from N10,262.56 in March 2023.

The statistics agency further clarified that on state profile analysis, Sokoto paid the highest average retail price for the refilling of a 12.5kg Cylinder of the item at N17,833.33, followed by Osun buyers who purchased at the average price of N17,588.46 and Anambra users at N17,417.65.

Conversely, the report reflected that lowest average price paid by users in Katsina was N12,400.00, followed by Kebbi and Bauchi consumers who bought the 12.5kg Cylinder at N13,137.50 and N14,484.25 respectively.

A further analysis on the pricing of the item in the month under review by zone showed that the South-South consumers paid the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg Cylinder of Cooking Gas at N16,859.85, followed by the South-East buyers who bought it at N16,734.87, while the North-East buyers paid the lowest price of N14,943.48.
